Clinician Background:
Darlene Sandlin’s passion for horses began at her family’s riding stable in Kansas City where she grew up managing and taking care of the horses, teaching lessons, and showing. During her Junior career, Darlene competed in the pony, junior, green, and working hunter divisions, as well as equitation classes including the Medal, Maclay, and USET. She later moved into the jumper divisions and competed in all levels through the open jumpers and Grand Prix. Darlene takes pride in training and developing her own horses taking them from their green years throughout their careers, and has done this with all but two of her early mounts. She has been described as dedicated, tenacious, and unwavering, with an affection, dedication and passion for her animals. Darlene spent much of her showing career as an amateur and turned professional in 1997 shortly before working for John and Beezie Madden as an assistant rider and trainer, where she has previously been acting as a working student. Her professional career highlights also include assistant rider and trainer positions with Peter Leone at Lionshare Farm and with Chris Kappler at CBK, Inc. at Hunterdon. She additionally assisted with coaching the Hamilton College Equestrian team at their IHSA events and was the owner/rider/trainer at Fair Have Farm in Canastota NY until 2021.
Over the years, she has trained with many storied names including Pauline “Cookie” Cook, Jim Corbin, Sandra Longan, Mike Henaghan, Brian Flynn, Wilson Dennehy, Bernie and Christine Traurig, Michael Endicott, Ronnie Beard, Michael Matz, George Morris, John and Beezie Madden, Peter Leone, Chris Kappler, Anne Kursinski, Nona Garson, Greg Best, Neil and Licha Shapiro, and with lessons and advice from countless others. She brings forth referrals and recommendations for her skills and expertise from John and Beezie Madden, Peter Leone, Chris Kappler, Anne Kursinski, Nona Garson, Hap Hanson, and Kevin Babington.
